Circular Fashion - What is it?

Geplaatst door Ryan Tindall op

You may have heard the term ‘Circular Fashion’ mentioned quite a lot just recently. But what does this actually mean in the fashion world?

According to Circular Fashion, it can be defined as clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulate responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use. (Dr. Anna Brismar, 2017).

So let’s say a dress is to be made, right from the offset a few things should be thought about when designing. I.e. recyclability, longevity and good ethics. When it comes to the sourcing and manufacturing again a few things need to be considered, i.e. a safe production environment, non-toxic and renewable sources (to name a few). During the manufacturing process there may be ‘offcuts or remnants’ left over. The idea here would be that those leftovers could then be used to make new products or recycled so that they don’t go to waste. The main goal in the whole process is to ensure that these products are designed and made to last as long as possible with as little waste as possible.

With the world becoming more and more aware of the problem that is caused by the waste, companies are now starting to build more sustainable practises into their models. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen, and that’s when the issue with fabric waste grows, both in the manufacturing process and with the fast fashion consumer base.

How can we help?

Once concept that is helping with the consumer waste problem are companies that allow you to rent other pieces of clothing. This means that instead of throwing away pieces of clothing because you don’t like them anymore, or don’t wear them, you can simply list them and let someone else (who may really like them) rent them off you to wear! One example is HURR Collective - check them out here!

During the manufacturing process is also where a lot of waste happens, and this is where AmoThreads comes in. We’re trying to help give you access to these ‘left over’ fabrics that would otherwise not get used. By giving you access to these fabrics means that you can know you have helped to give that fabric a new lease of life!

What will you make?
